The report underlines that Mauritius ranks 45th out of 137 countries, maintaining the same place as last year. However, its overall score has improved slightly. The report categorises Mauritius in a group of 20 countries which are transitioning from Stage 2 to Stage 3. This refers to the shift from an efficiency-driven economy to an Innovation-driven one, in line with government’s objective to attain the high-income-country status.

The report underlines that the country’s main rivals have fallen back such as South Africa, which dropped by 14 places to 61st and Rwanda, which dropped seven places to 58th. The Global Competitiveness Index measures the factors that drive long-term growth and prosperity. It helps policymakers identify challenges to be addressed as well as strengths to be built upon when elaborating strategies for economic growth.
